Over the past five years we have been actively involved with Riker products. Riker manufacture industrial power supplies, typically operating in the 500 - 5000A range. In February 2001, PaniK was commissioned to design a new PCB (Printed Circuit Board) set for a new line of production prototype units.

The power supply chain is an analogue control loop which generates a pulse-width modulated drive signal to a high power IGBT set running in full bridge configuration. Output current and voltage are fed-back into the loop to ensure very accurate control of the output parameters.

The Riker 1Ka 10V production unit. This accepts 3 phase input and will produce 10Kw output under PC control. Due to the nature of the control loop the PC can assert a voltage and current "demand" on the unit and it will respond to within a few PPM. The PC can interrogate the unit for its status, output current, voltage and even converter temperature.

The development during 2001 centered on the redesign of the existing control system with a total of seven PC board layouts being produced, assembled and tested.

PaniK have now supported Riker on an on-going basis since 2001. Our latest product version is a light weight plastic cased circuit breaker tester weighing less than 25Kg, (for a 5Ka tester!). We are extremely proud of this product, which has attracted enormous interest from Riker’s customers.

At the end of 2001, a new switching algorithm was tested and implemented. In addition, Riker built a 5KA current injection tester, designed to test large circuit breakers. The control system for this project was based on their latest "soft switching" algorithm with an additional control PCB to produce a ramp signal to control the current demand and a sample and hold to record the trip level.
